Patriarchy and the Division of Housework: An Example from Contemporary Arab Families
Última modificación: 2020-01-01
Resumen
Emirati society has been witnessing a rapid social and economic change for the past five decades, since the discovery of oil in the 1960s and the establishment of the state in 1971. This change has reflected on the functions, roles, and interactions within Emirati families. However, patriarchy continues to control family life. The main research question here is to what extent the overall masculine culture impacts family’s chores, responsibilities, and decisions. A survey conducted among a sample of university students reveals the relationship between patriarchy and the division of housework in families of United Arab Emirates. One unique aspect is the heavy reliance on expatriate female housemaids in performing a great deal of housework.
