Abstract

This article is intended to bring to light the debt owed to the work of political-philosopher Antonio Gramsci by the field of cultural studies founded by Raymond Williams. Fundamentally, it intends to demonstrate how Williams found in Gramsci an adequate method to analyze the cultural-artistic demonstrations in relation to the fight for hegemony and how it is that since Gramsci the later development of cultural studies can be understood, from Williams to Stuart Hall. Through the analysis of the work of Williams and owing to the understanding of the thoughts of Gramsci we are able to identify Gramci's legacy as a decisive element in the foundation of the cultural studies and understand  how they gave birth to the multidisciplinary work in this field through the pioneering work of Raymond Williams. At the same time we can arrive to the conclusion that Gramsci's Quaderni as much as the lesser known "early writings" led Williams to the discovery of not only the adequate method to analyze the cultural-artistic demonstrations in relation to hegemony, but Gramsci also provided those who have founded cultural studies in universities around the world with an important number of problematic key words.
